Matt & Kim

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009 by Kyle

punk-pop // dance

There’s no denying the exhilarating, rambunctious joy set free by Brooklyn darlings Matt & Kim. An Old West saloon piano jump-starts this song and never lets go; quickly flurried with rousing synths and a thumping beat that blasts through walls like Mr Kool-Aid. From lazy days in bed to cherished moments anywhere, this is exactly the kind of exuberant grandeur I am oh-so curiously seeking throughout life. Hopefully they make you smile and remind you to hold nothing back, because anything is possible. Yeah!

Shockwaves of keyboard & drum jubilee!

Enur – Calabria

Friday, May 30th, 2008 by Paul Irish

dance // tropical // reggae

You’ve probably heard this. Either you’ve danced to this in a club, or you’ve heard the bastardization of it that Pitbull and Lil’ Jon did, “The Anthem”. But here’s the real story: the instrumental was done by Danish DJ Enur in 2003. It blew up in Ibiza but stayed cool everywhere else until late 2006 when it was mashed together with vocals from Crystal Waters into a track called “Destination Calabria” which hit the charts hard. Last year Enur takes the track and throws on vocals from Dannish reggae queen Natasja Saad, who sadly died of a car accident before she could see its absolute success. And now? You dance.

The summer jam of 2008.

Aurgasmic Adventures: Betahouse Mix

Thursday, April 17th, 2008 by Paul Irish

My good friends at Betahouse, a coworking space in Boston, asked me to put together a mix for their latest party. I was delighted to do so. My mate Tom Kershaw and I boiled down our fave tracks to a solid set.

I continued in the same vein as the Breeze & Sweat mix from 2006 – a sultry, funky, jazzy, chill to hot mix of tunes.

A few funky ones have debuted on Aurgasm before (Bahamadia, Flevans & Freddie), Kraak And Smaak deliver both the hot Max Sedgley and their own brand-new track, and Boston-natives Soul Clap close with some techno heat.

Mix available here as a 104mb zip

Eddy Meets Yannah

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 by Julija

brazilian broken beat // soul-jazz // dance

There are a lot of things happening in the Balkans’ music scene: in most cases unheard and unknown widely. While there’s an obvious lack of coverage on Eddy Meets Yannah in the blogosphere, the Zagreb-based duo was praised by Gilles Peterson of BBC’s Radio 1 and has remixed musical pieces of such artists as Elisabeth Shepherd and Bobby Caldwell. With Eddy at the decks and Yannah’s vocal and arrangement talents, the two experiment in mixing sweaty broken beats, nu-jazz and soulful house. Unless you listen closely to the lyrics, you might not even recognize “Can’t Hide Love” is a futuristically-retro version of the classic Earth, Wind and Fire track.

Blending energetic fusion and the seductive quality of sound.

Club des Belugas

Thursday, March 13th, 2008 by Kyle

nu-jazz // lounge

By bringing together musicians from multiple generations and countries, Germany based Maxim Illion & Kitty the Bill’s Club des Belugas brainchild is contemporary, classic, and terrifically varied. On a relaxing, beautiful day, Swedish singer Anna.Luca will croon your fancy before Brenda Boykin’s California energy gets you swinging the night away. Other guests include Iain Mackenzie from London, Dean Bowman from New York, and Fred Astaire, whose “Puttin’ on the Ritz” gets remixed for their latest album, Swop!

Irresistibly hip.

Minimatic

Friday, March 7th, 2008 by Julija

lounge dance // chill-out

Legendary Serge Gainsbourg’s works have been interpreted, sampled, re-recorded and used as inspiration by countless talented artists. Focusing on the dance floor enjoyment, French producer, musician and DJ, Minimatic a.k.a. Pascal Houpert remixes “Chez Les Yé-Yé’s”, celebrating his fatal love for stylish tunes and retro soul-funk. Reworking the 80′s music, Minimatic’s cover of successful A-ha’s synth-pop hit “Take On Me” is more about finesse: laid-back grooves of the beach and the sunny coast, smooth arrangements, sleazy hints and romance. Efficiently and excellently produced.

Balkan Beats

Sunday, January 13th, 2008 by Paul Irish

balkan brass remixed // gypsy dance

Balkan dance music has been picking up speed in Europe, in part thanks to the Bucovina Club parties, and in New York at Mehanata Bulgarian Bar. It’s caught my ears lately as well, with blaring horns and Balkan beats discofied to crazy hype levels. Here are two floor mashers I’ve been working into my sets lately. The first comes from Mahala Rai Banda. You may recognize this tune from the Borat soundtrack, but this Felix B dub adds some crushing backbone. It’s on Gypsy Beats and Balkan Bangers out on Atlantic Jaxx. The second is a DJ Zoki blend of Serbian Trubaci and Reggaeton, a great digital dig via thebestyudjs.de.vu, featuring a slew of Euro DJ’s dabbling in Balkan sounds.

From the Balkans to the bumpin’ basements.
Mahala Rai Banda – Mahalageasca (Felix B Jazzhouse Dub)
DJ Zoki – Trubaci Cik Cik (Reggaeton Remix)

Music and words contributed by DJ Ghostdad who spins in Boston, hosts Mofo Radio on WZBC, and blogs.

Samantha James

Friday, January 11th, 2008 by Kyle

deep house // downtempo

Tropically warm, upbeat and blissful; exactly what I was looking for to start 2008. Teaming up with Sebastian Arocha Morton, aka ROCAsound, and San Francisco based OM Records, Samantha James‘ debut is a soulful unison that her honeyed voice must have been made for. Embracing any surrounding with its aura; whether in a bedroom, out for a drive, or steaming up a club, Rise will sustain its essence hovering all around and inside you. A bossa nova flare from Aurgasm alum Celso Fonseca adds a wonderful touch.

OM grooves lift spirits to continue onward.

Kira Neris

nu-jazz // downtempo

At 11 years old, Hervé Poudoulec begins hearing and feeling music over the radio. His mind collects fragments and wonders what to do; pondering from Rock to House, Dance and Jazz; amassing over 4000 samples before experiencing The Cinematic Orchestra’s ‘Motion‘ – helping to align hidden vibrations. Kira Neris graciously strides from downtempo and jazzy affairs to voluptuous dance vibes with an earnest underlining.

Marvelous samples enriched in soulful harmonies.
