CPI

February 6th, 2007 by Paul Irish

club // electro // dj mix

From for the last few years, Caitlyn (aka CPI) has been blending some very fine music into engaging mixes and releasing them for free. Based in Ottawa, her handiwork has lead me to discover downtempo maestro Mawglee, who I posted here a safe two years ago. Her newest mix turns up the dial to fiery hot, mixing electro with club and hip hop. M.I.A to The Knife, with Simian Mobile Disco and MSTRKRFT; Roots Manuva, Diplo, and DJ Ayres- to name a few. (Full tracklist in the comments)

Quite simply: shit to make you go bounce.

Flanger

January 25th, 2007 by Paul Irish

soul // german post-jazz

Flanger first recorded records in the experimental downtempo realm. When they started recording their 2005 album, Spirituals they seemed to take a page from label-mate Jamie Lidell‘s book: they transitioned into more soul ‘n blues based songwriting. The reeded instruments in “Crime in the Pale Moonlight” provide the perfect accouterments to Riff Pike’s crooning. “How Long is the Wrong Way” gives us a little lighter jaunt down Finger Snappin’ Lane.

Where inspiration to play and sing come from above.

Inch-Time

January 22nd, 2007 by Paul Irish

minimal // melodic // laptop folk

Stirring itself amongst the air molecules, Inch-Time’s music seems to honor the air that carries it. It treats the medium as a character in the music. Aussie Stefan Panczak (currently based in London) wields a precise production of organic and natural sampled sounds. He released this single early 2006 and has since released his LP on UK label Static Caravan. “Icicles & Snowflakes” peeked out at me from the recent Jazzanova & Resoul compilation Secret Love 3.

A deliberate leak from your speakers.

Val Bennett

January 9th, 2007 by Paul Irish

roots reggae // jazz standard cover

It’s been unseasonably warm in the Northeast and the dry air necessitates humidifiers which then inevitably lead me to mimicking some deep toking. All in all, the perfect ambiance to absorb some new new reggae and dub CDs my roommate Adam just acquired. I heard this tune snaking out of his room just an hour ago. Oddly enough, it’s not from his CDs, but rather playing from the theme of the 80’s series “The Secret Life Of Machines(recommended!). This is basically a roots reggae cover of the Dave Brubek Quartet classic “Take Five”. While Brubek’s name is usually attached to the tune, it’s genius was actually conceived by writer Paul Desmond, who was one of my first posts on Aurgasm.

Take it easy, take it slow, take five.

Jomi Massage

January 1st, 2007 by Julija

danish singer-songwriter // brooding // experimental

Jomi Massage is not the name of a woman. It’s an “electric massage device” from the early 1960’s, back when marketing such a device was rather daring. Songwriter Signe Hoirup Willie-Jorgensen wanted embody the sensual, touching and alluring feeling with her brave music as Jomi Massage. Listen to “Undressing Aloud” with your headphones plugged in: it is filled with sensuality, thrilling tenderness, and contains a certain vulnerable and fragile feeling. “Like weather” sounds melancholic, slightly moody and sorrowful.

Daring and baring, expressive and sensitive.

Hey DJ Friday: Chris Isaak and dub

December 22nd, 2006 by Paul Irish

Dub feels like the perfect match for one of the all-time classic love songs, “Wicked Game”. Business Man is a pseudonym of electronic music artist of the year Trentemøller, and he continues to execute with finesse.

A World Remixed

December 11th, 2006 by Paul Irish

world dance // latin chill // flamenco remixed

Today I’ve got a pair of worldly remixes featured as part of National Geographic Music’s new presence at the most-excellent Calabash Music. (Entirely DRM-free mp3s, natch). The Nortec Collective used to get press from Time and the sort; they’re a large group of Latin Americans that mash together some energetic panamerican beats. Most of their stuff comes off as repetitive to me, but Rosco tempers their excitement into a chill downtempo groove. (One which deserves a spot in the next Nip/Tuck episode.) Then in the second track, Ojos de Brujo’s hip hop flamenco meets Nitin Sawhney’s asian underground treatment.

Well-produced worldly beats.

Hey DJ Friday: Certified Bananas

December 7th, 2006 by Paul Irish

Sizzling off Certified Bananas’ new mixtape Sprang, this hot little number stylishly blends the Little Mermaid classic with the baltimore club sound. Certified Bananas, based in Providence, are two very talented and kind gentlemen (Sammy Bananas recut this track exclusively for Aurgasm). You can hear their signature sound of club beats, retro tracks and clever mashups in the clubs of Boston and New York frequently. Seek ‘em out.

Certified Bananas – Kiss The Girl (Baltimore Remix)

UPDATE: If you’re feeling this, the boys are in Boston at the Enormous Room TONIGHT! Also, drop by Discobelle to peep their brand new exclusive mix ‘Sweden on Blast’. Holla.

Worm Is Green

December 5th, 2006 by Paul Irish

indie electronica // icelandic post-rock

Like being broadcast out of an Icelandic radio tower, Worm Is Green comes into frequency beset by tweaks, intermittent tones, and an ethereal voice. Then a lethargic squelch escorts you onto a slow but scenic dirge. These days I almost exclusively listen to music released in 2006 (blame it on the blog), but Green’s 2002 record Automagic is one of the few exceptions that won’t let go of me. Maybe its the sub-60bpm tempos. Perhaps its eclectic use of acoustic and electronic instruments. But what I really think is…

They’ve got a stranglehold on that feeling that you just can’t put words to.

Under Byen

November 29th, 2006 by Julija

danish post-rock // experimental // shoegazing

I suppose many of you would associate Denmark with good music and cinema. Under Byen is no exception, and to me it’s all about extraordinary beauty. So far, everything I’ve ever heard by Under Byen I’d describe as floaty and sensual, sharp and intense—all at once. It’s the kind of music that captures and allures you with the beautiful arrangements, sensitive female vocals and poetic lyrics. (Yes, it does sound poetic and magical even if you don’t know a single word in Danish.) Melodic and dreamy “Byen driver” gives an idea of the earlier works. “Den her sang handler om at fÃ¥ det bedste ud af det” from Samme Stof Som Stof (2006) sounds intense, very powerful and fascinating for seven and a half minutes.

“Between the pleasant dream and the nightmare.
