Kultiration

swedish roots reggae

Swedish roots reggae, you read, with your eyebrow arching high? Oh yes. Of course I gave it the same skepticism that I give Japanese hip hop; how exactly can a culture so far away and even with different climatology bring authenticity and maturity to the genre? And yet this Swedish nonet creates a sound that is both respectful and innovative. You can’t deny ‘Ur Jord’ doesn’t have the catchiness of a Ben Harper or Dispatch tune, while ‘En Timme Kvar Att Leva’ starts you off completely differently−suddenly you feel like you’re in a Yann Tiersen score. (Amelie, perhaps?)

Musical roots meet songwriting ingenuity.

CPI

club // electro // dj mix

From for the last few years, Caitlyn (aka CPI) has been blending some very fine music into engaging mixes and releasing them for free. Based in Ottawa, her handiwork has lead me to discover downtempo maestro Mawglee, who I posted here a safe two years ago. Her newest mix turns up the dial to fiery hot, mixing electro with club and hip hop. M.I.A to The Knife, with Simian Mobile Disco and MSTRKRFT; Roots Manuva, Diplo, and DJ Ayres- to name a few. (Full tracklist in the comments)

Quite simply: shit to make you go bounce.

Flanger

Thursday, January 25th, 2007 by Paul Irish

soul // german post-jazz

Flanger first recorded records in the experimental downtempo realm. When they started recording their 2005 album, Spirituals they seemed to take a page from label-mate Jamie Lidell‘s book: they transitioned into more soul ‘n blues based songwriting. The reeded instruments in “Crime in the Pale Moonlight” provide the perfect accouterments to Riff Pike’s crooning. “How Long is the Wrong Way” gives us a little lighter jaunt down Finger Snappin’ Lane.

Where inspiration to play and sing come from above.

Inch-Time

Monday, January 22nd, 2007 by Paul Irish

minimal // melodic // laptop folk

Stirring itself amongst the air molecules, Inch-Time’s music seems to honor the air that carries it. It treats the medium as a character in the music. Aussie Stefan Panczak (currently based in London) wields a precise production of organic and natural sampled sounds. He released this single early 2006 and has since released his LP on UK label Static Caravan. “Icicles & Snowflakes” peeked out at me from the recent Jazzanova & Resoul compilation Secret Love 3.

A deliberate leak from your speakers.

Val Bennett

roots reggae // jazz standard cover

It’s been unseasonably warm in the Northeast and the dry air necessitates humidifiers which then inevitably lead me to mimicking some deep toking. All in all, the perfect ambiance to absorb some new new reggae and dub CDs my roommate Adam just acquired. I heard this tune snaking out of his room just an hour ago. Oddly enough, it’s not from his CDs, but rather playing from the theme of the 80’s series “The Secret Life Of Machines(recommended!). This is basically a roots reggae cover of the Dave Brubek Quartet classic “Take Five”. While Brubek’s name is usually attached to the tune, it’s genius was actually conceived by writer Paul Desmond, who was one of my first posts on Aurgasm.

Take it easy, take it slow, take five.

Jomi Massage

danish singer-songwriter // brooding // experimental

Jomi Massage is not the name of a woman. It’s an “electric massage device” from the early 1960’s, back when marketing such a device was rather daring. Songwriter Signe Hoirup Willie-Jorgensen wanted embody the sensual, touching and alluring feeling with her brave music as Jomi Massage. Listen to “Undressing Aloud” with your headphones plugged in: it is filled with sensuality, thrilling tenderness, and contains a certain vulnerable and fragile feeling. “Like weather” sounds melancholic, slightly moody and sorrowful.

Daring and baring, expressive and sensitive.
