Madeleine Peyroux
vocal jazz // standards
Romance ain’t my thing, but even I’m susceptible to the charms of a romantic comedy. Hard to say if its the beautiful people, happy endings, extravagant lifestyles or playful dialogue that pique my interest, but for sure, the well-crafted soundtracks that accompany these movies make them easier to love. I discovered Madeleine Peyroux in the credits of 2005’s Monster-in-Law, but her warm, Billie Holiday vocal style makes her a soundtrack favorite. The two songs below from her LP Careless Love glisten with All-American nostalgia and romance.
Perfect with dim lighting and drink in hand.

Hey there! I really enjoy going to your music blog! It keeps slipping my mind these past couple of months to send a shout out to you for the great and broad range of music u got here. keep it coming! and just so to let you know, a local music journalist here highlighted your music site in last week’s review section, it was nothing much, he gave mention of the Fast Car instrumental d/l but i was happy that he brought it up cos your site is one of the best and most diverse. Really enjoy the posts!
Oh very cool! Thank you for the kind words, Liza.
What publication was that in?
‘Sup there! It was for a major local newspaper, for the Life!Music Section. I’m from the tiny nation called Singapore.Keep up the music Paul, seriously this is COOL stuff.
I first heard Peyroux in a little restaurant in Chicago, right down the street from the Metro. It was hear cover of Elliot Smith’s “Between the Bars.” It blew my mind, especially at first when I tried to figure out how Billie Holiday travelled forward in time to cover the guy.
Thanks for the music.
u know, i was SO SURPRISED when i heard Don’t Wait Too Long by Peyroux on the series, Commander in Chief towards the ending..WOW! she’s getting places!!!if anyone’s got between the bars mp3 pls post it!!!
Liza, there’s a nice live version of the song here at The Late Greats.
Anne, you picked a great artist to debut with. I hope you will treat us to more of your favorites.
Paul, I agree that the Peyroux cuts over at the Late Greats site are very nice. In fact, I like the solo radio performance of Don’t Wait To Long better than the album version. Because of the spontaneity, it has more feeling. I wish I could play guitar like that. Leon Redbone could learn a thing or two from Madeleine. :)
you have a girlfriend? argh…just my luck
Ms. Peyroux was on Conan tonight, your influence is spreading!
