Madeleine Peyroux

vocal jazz // standards

Romance ain’t my thing, but even I’m susceptible to the charms of a romantic comedy. Hard to say if its the beautiful people, happy endings, extravagant lifestyles or playful dialogue that pique my interest, but for sure, the well-crafted soundtracks that accompany these movies make them easier to love. I discovered Madeleine Peyroux in the credits of 2005’s Monster-in-Law, but her warm, Billie Holiday vocal style makes her a soundtrack favorite. The two songs below from her LP Careless Love glisten with All-American nostalgia and romance.

Perfect with dim lighting and drink in hand.

Really enjoy the posts!

I first heard Peyroux in a little restaurant in Chicago, right down the street from the Metro. It was hear cover of Elliot Smith’s “Between the Bars.” It blew my mind, especially at first when I tried to figure out how Billie Holiday travelled forward in time to cover the guy.

    Thanks for the music.

Liza, there’s a nice live version of the song here at The Late Greats.

Anne, you picked a great artist to debut with. I hope you will treat us to more of your favorites.

Paul, I agree that the Peyroux cuts over at the Late Greats site are very nice. In fact, I like the solo radio performance of Don’t Wait To Long better than the album version. Because of the spontaneity, it has more feeling. I wish I could play guitar like that. Leon Redbone could learn a thing or two from Madeleine. :)
