It's playful and serious. As Dani says herself, "it's about woman."

Launched two years ago, Aurgasm has developed into a destination of passionate music lovers around the globe. Its audience includes music mavens, critics, journalists, and bloggers—a highly influential audience. It has been profiled in The Boston Globe and mentioned on MSNBC.com, BoingBoing, Kottke, del.icio.us, and digg. Aurgasm specializes in everything not under the American rock umbrella—music such as: downtempo, folk, nu jazz, chanson, scandinavian, jazz, cuban, brazilian, electro, soul, jump blues, bluegrass, film score, and electronica.
A young man of twenty-five years, Paul's interest in music was initiated by his parents' rock band, playing The Standell's 'Dirty Water' in his basement. Since the mp3 format appeared on the internet, Paul has been eager to find his next favorite song.
His interests include: user experience design, emerging web trends, ecommerce, branding, maps, product design, typography, information design/overload, & sustainability.

I listen to everything I'm sent, but I prefer music that isn't by a 'band'.
Julija is an art student in Vilnius, Lithuania fond of wine and contemporary design. Andrew (blog) is a travelling Scot who writes and currently lives in London.
A very pitchfork-ish sounding review. I love the site.
I've always been a fan of their earlier stuff, namely Bless You, a great front-porch, late-summer evening record. Based on these two tracks, I may have to check out their newer material - thanks!
I can't help but make the inevitable Herbert comparison, especially since producing, it's got his "sound" all over it. This reminds me of a Girl Bros. or even a Prince protege release. Her voice is smart and smooth. Nice for a cloudy day or long evening, and a competently jazzy without trying too hard. Is the rest of the album this nice? Thanks Paul!
(Who's the DJ during "Come As You Are?")
And yes, I bet theres a number of bloggers who could claim ownership on the reappearance of a sample in mainsteam music. I'm mostly sharing these because they're all great songs. :)
And just for fun, here's a more famous cover of "Fever" and the original:
Peggy Lee - Fever (1958)
Little Willie John - Fever (1956)
Calling La Lupe energetic may even be an understatement. According to my father, she was married to her pianist. During performances of especially heartbreaking boleros she would start beating up on him as the lyrics of the song might dictate, even smacking him with one of her shoes.
aha! i've been obsessing over big chief for months now, it's an ace tune. i've even been playing it out when i do sets off my laptop at random events. i didn't know where i'd downloaded it from so i didn't know who to thank, but now you've come clean, so... thank you!
Gee thanks a lot Paul for the Between the Bars track. i am indeed gonna have to buy Peyroux's first, before Dylan's Modern Times.
I'm still waiting for Huey Smith & The Clowns' "Don't You Just Know It" you posted on to show up as a sample in a monster hip hop track (or maybe a Vonage TV commercial) . . . or have i missed it?
p.s. i think you're too humble on the aurgasm readership/influence tip.
The Lily Allen track is so much fun, and now I'll be on the lookout for more of her stuff. Thanks for sharing!
matt,
you may be right. based on my numbers alone, my influence is likely bigger than i suspect.
in fact, at a job interview this past week, the interviewer had seen my blog previously. haha. i don't mind it.
you had me offside with your cutesy "about" in the sidebar... wow, thank-you so much for helping me!!
have fun in your pay-for-play world seppo's...
here in australia we have triplej, suck it!
Don't ask how I came across it, but I think I heard this tune in the trailer of 'Must love dog'. Correct?
Hey there! I really enjoy going to your music blog! It keeps slipping my mind these past couple of months to send a shout out to you for the great and broad range of music u got here. keep it coming! and just so to let you know, a local music journalist here highlighted your music site in last week's review section, it was nothing much, he gave mention of the Fast Car instrumental d/l but i was happy that he brought it up cos your site is one of the best and most diverse. Really enjoy the posts!
Oh very cool! Thank you for the kind words, Liza.
What publication was that in?
'Sup there! It was for a major local newspaper, for the Life!Music Section. I'm from the tiny nation called Singapore.Keep up the music Paul, seriously this is COOL stuff.
I first heard Peyroux in a little restaurant in Chicago, right down the street from the Metro. It was hear cover of Elliot Smith's "Between the Bars." It blew my mind, especially at first when I tried to figure out how Billie Holiday travelled forward in time to cover the guy.
Thanks for the music.
u know, i was SO SURPRISED when i heard Don't Wait Too Long by Peyroux on the series, Commander in Chief towards the ending..WOW! she's getting places!!!if anyone's got between the bars mp3 pls post it!!!
Liza, there's a nice live version of the song here at The Late Greats.
Anne, you picked a great artist to debut with. I hope you will treat us to more of your favorites.
Paul, I agree that the Peyroux cuts over at the Late Greats site are very nice. In fact, I like the solo radio performance of Don't Wait To Long better than the album version. Because of the spontaneity, it has more feeling. I wish I could play guitar like that. Leon Redbone could learn a thing or two from Madeleine. :)
you have a girlfriend? argh...just my luck
Ms. Peyroux was on Conan tonight, your influence is spreading!
hey paul thanks for stopping by. i need to add you to my blogroll you have great stuff here. i love this fink record great stuff.
Wow. Really wow. I don't think I could describe it with words, but that All Cried Out track is just delicious. Can't stop playing it. Thank you!
first of all, i love all the frequent posts! secondly, i really like fink and have been checking out some of his other tracks and albums now. thanks for the lead!
Strange. Many Folks in Germany know Fink as a german Indie-Group: http://finkmusik.de
It´s a bird it´s called "finch" in your language. But there seems to be another Finkbirg out there ;) Perhaps they should tour together.
Hah. Yes it looks like there's two.
http://www.finkworld.co.uk/
Saw Fink perform on the weekend at the Greenman festival in Wales - pretty damn good for a DJ turned alt.folk strummy guitar act! Cover of All Cried Out works really well.
Yes, seems to be a lot of FINK out there...
Really great stuff. The slide and general feel reminds me of Mofro, who I love.
Brilliant album, a highlight for me. Another release by Fink in 2000 called 'Fresh Produce' may explain the connection with Ninja Tunes, it is completely different, chilled electronic style. Both great albums, but nothing alike.
Well, I bought the album (yet another purchase because of Aurgasm :) ) and it's fantastic. Highly recommended to all.
Love the blog--just put it on my blogrolls.
I was turned off by Fink when I heard some songs from his new album--I liked the sounds of Fresh Produce and his "We Are Ninja" better than his new stuff. But thanks to your blog, I'm reconsidering him.
Just want to second Jens' comment -- the German indie band "Fink" has been around a long time. IMHO, their music is much more interesting than the "new" Fink. Check out their songs Neuer Anzug, Kleines grünes Haus, Dies für Dich, or Messerkampf ("knife-fight" in English) for a sample of the wide range of music they make. Really great stuff that almost nobody outside of Germany has heard, I guess.
biscuits war sehr geil ja!
Interesting, thanks
Just started my own music blog
Please come and see it, and maybe share some ideas!

If you like Helena you can listen to her last project with frederico Pellegrini, Bang !. http://myspace.com/dillingergirlandbabyfacenelson
I like this project a lot and I'll just add this link with a few live mp3's:
http://planetconcert5.free.fr/Dillinger.htm
Helena guest-stars on a lot of other albums, by Doriand, Ollano, Mary L, Katerine and Projet: Bikini. If somebody has that Projet:Bikini album, pleasepleaseplease let me know!!
Btw: you know Helena's the sister of Lio, right?
And Dimitri from Paris to add to the list. :) Hm, no, I didn't really know about Lio. Merci. Speaking of Projet: Bikini, I've only heard Minimum and seen the video, voila:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4kcg_helena-noguerra-minimum
Well, I have Projet:Bikini now. Will post tracks some time next week. But first: charlotte!
I have been waiting for you to discover her! She's one of my favourite french artists. I have all 3 of her albums, and her collaboration with Ollano--you should check out 'Latitudes' and 'partir revinir', it's french trip hop. My favourite cd of Helena is Projet:Bikini
Beautiful songs!
Incredible!!! Thank you so much for this! I can't imagine this being pulled off live -its perfection. How many backing vocalists does she have on here?
This could possibly replace the Bad Plus's Veloria for my favorite Pixies cover...
It's not related to your post, which I have yet to hear...but I just got back from a Rodrigo y Gabriela concert and wanted to thank you for opening my ears to this duo. They totally rocked out and were having so much fun
I saw her at the Big Chill 2 weeks ago and she was absolutely fantastic live. Thanks for recommending her months ago or i would have missed her.
fabulous voice and the only person i know who plays a bicycle on stage
ralph
I once saw a documentary in which Frank Zappa was playing (sort of) a bicycle. Not sure he's ever done it on stage though :)
love it. i wasn't aware that the pixies wrote stuff that was that good. should maybe give them another listen ...
Sounds good man, probably not as energetic as a Maceo Parker would and probably sort of flat in a way but there's some good stuff. Keep us informed about these funky brothers you manage to find.
I haven't heard this particular type of fusion, though I imagine that it is quite a bit easier than say, Jazz/electronica fusion which is something that i have heard of. I like the songs though. I'll check out the cd.
are you effoveks from #divx.edu?
Apollon? Is that you? :)
Love the blog - seriously, best music blog I've ever read. The music you find is absolutely spectacular. Keep on rockin'
I just returned from a three week trip to Africa and found this site full of updates. Made my day!
Great music choice with Jehro - as always :]

i'll get it moving.

Here's Jehro's website:

Damn I love this Jehro guy!
His number "All I Want" is amazing. - It's by the way to be found on the new Hotel Costes 9 compilation :-)
I just wanted to say this blog is different. It´s full of strength and marvelous songs that remind you of different moments in each one´s lifetime.
Go on with it...
Hi all, it's nice to here from Jehro!
You'll find a documentary about his short stay in New York, you should like it.
4 episodes to come this week here:
http://www.wat.tv/Jehro
I am in love with "All I want" first song i heard on the 9the Costes CD and wow.. i am speechless. I am a musician myself and i am in shook of how good he put that song in and the lyrics.. man great stuff.

Nice one! They were playing Slappers in one of the local record shops, and I recognized her voice from Scale. Good stuff, thanks.
