About Aurgasm

Launched two years ago, Aurgasm has developed into a destination of passionate music lovers around the globe. Its audience includes music mavens, critics, journalists, and bloggers—a highly influential audience. It has been profiled in The Boston Globe and mentioned on MSNBC.com, BoingBoing, Kottke, del.icio.us, and digg. Aurgasm specializes in everything not under the American rock umbrella—music such as: downtempo, folk, nu jazz, chanson, scandinavian, jazz, cuban, brazilian, electro, soul, jump blues, bluegrass, film score, and electronica.

About Paul Irish

A young man of twenty-five years, Paul's interest in music was initiated by his parents' rock band, playing The Standell's 'Dirty Water' in his basement. Since the mp3 format appeared on the internet, Paul has been eager to find his next favorite song.

His interests include: user experience design, emerging web trends, ecommerce, branding, maps, product design, typography, information design/overload, & sustainability.

Belleruche

british soul // turntable soul
The London based threesome of soulful singer, vintage guitarist and a DJ has attracted attention in the underground music scene before the actual album release. And there is a solid reason for that. From funky soul and jazz-like ballads to swinging melodies, combining their hip-hop fetishes with atmospheric instrumentation, Belleruche comes with a long-awaited refreshing sound. Certain delicious vocal similarities and rhythmic quirks makes me think of now parted Moloko.

Dusty vinyl + rum-fueled contemporary sound.

  • nice one, paul.
    fresh tunes for the masses.

Been checking them out on myspace and I love this track named "Bump". Yes, you're right, there is some Moloko to it.
I love the way the drums sound on that track, man.

    keep 'em coming.

  • Wow, that is really an amazingly unique sound. I LOVE IT!

  • @musicman74, I should point out that Julija wrote this post. (Although it seems we independently discovered Belleruche not too long ago. :)
    Cheers

  • oops , my mistake.
    and shame on me ...

wasn't aware of the fact somebody by the alias of julija was posting here. I'm afraid I always just assumed aurgasm was a paul solo project.

to find out that julija happens to be behind some of my all time favourite aurgasm findings, including ane brun.

i was a julija fan before i knew she/he even existed.

ye,good question, music man 74, he or she ?

    keep 'em coming, julija.
    keep 'em coming, paul.

  • Hi there, music man,
I am very glad to hear about your all time favourite Aurgasm findings.
Oh, and I thought it was obvious Julija is a female name. ;-)

  • very interesting

minor swing seems to be the same base of esthero's "wicked little girls"

    great voice.

    @ Kenji:

The base background beat in "Minor Swing" is actually from the original "Minor Swing" from Django Reinhardt (gypsy jazz).

  • @Alexandra, great info! I totally forgot about Django. Here's the video: Django Reinhardt and band playing Minor Swing

  • Very interesting post. Amazing cover of minor swing, but of course, the video you linked doesn't feature Django: it's his brother (and rhythm guitarist in the Quintette Du Hot Club De France), Joseph "Nin Nin" Reinhardt, with Stephane Grappeli on the violin.

  • Hey just visited their website and saw they had a release party tomorrow night in London. DJ Vadim will be there showing some love to his Tru Thought friends.

  • I'll have to check them out - being a lover of music, I think their CD will be the first on my acquisition list. Thanks.

  • Woohoo! Album's arrived. I'll let you know how I get on with it.

  • Belleruche and Parov Stelar should hook up and have (musical) babies... their sounds are groovily interrelated and make me wanna dance.

Detektivbyrån

french folk fusion // musette waltz
While I typically prize innovation in music, this music seems flatly derivative of another favorite artist of mine. And yet, I'm still completely floored by how good it is. If you've enjoyed the music of Amelie, you've consumed the unique arrangements of Yann Tiersen, who has a delicious repertoire that includes Good Bye Lenin and Les Retrouvailles, etc. Until now, I'd call his music starkly unique, but Detektivbyran's recordings seem to mimic the instrumentation and style of his alluring recordings. Toy piano, glockenspiel and squeezebox sprinkle across the mad hatter's workshop of sound. (Thx Christian! A lot!)

Majestic yet innocent. Whimsically complex.

  • This music nearly brought me to tears. Thanks again to my Swedish friend Christian for the introduction. And thanks to the band for making their best songs freely available as mp3s on their website.

Their music is available for purchase through their website. It costs about $14 (incl. shipping) for their EP, which is the most solid of their three very impressive recordings.

  • Favorite parts:
E18: The delicate synth climax that hits at 2:04 (though you have to hear the 40 second lead-in). Make this music louder than you think is necessary.
Nattoppet: The warm blanket of sound enveloping you at the two-minute mark. Comes right when you've been enjoying its vulnerability.

  • Off topic, but related to your most recent link on the right.

As someone who works in Congress, I can tell you that contacting your representative isn't necessarily what you need to do. I promise your representative already knows about the issue, and also that they're not getting a whole lot of letters from constituents saying "Stop Internet Radio!" There is no public movement disagreeing with you.

At this point, the biggest problem is actually the major internet radio companies. AOL, Yahoo, and other large internet broadcasters control the industry group that speaks for internet broadcasters. There are a variety of compromises on the table, but the industry group is not being very accommodating. Why is this? I can't say for sure, but I've heard it said by people who usually know these things that AOL and the other majors are happy enough to wait until after the July royalty kick in date to negotiate. They have the money to weather a higher royalty environment, while many of their medium sized competitors don't.

Essentially, by refusing to compromise or make good faith negotiations until the new royalty regime kicks in, conglomerated media has the ability to knock out most of their competition. They then weather the storm, work out a compromise, and boost their market share in the process. Because the smaller internet broadcasters are so much more fragmented, they can't speak with a unified voice, and therefore are less likely to find a seat at the table.

So if you're going to write anyone a letter, make it AOL. Not that they have any reason to listen.

  • Wow, Thanks Kerry!
It's great to have your perspective and knowledge shared. Very interesting.

When Detektivbyrån releases their full-length, be sure to give them another plug so 'this guy' can fork over the dough for some aural treats.

  • very nice!

    good find Paul.

  • Wow. When I listened to this music some amazing emotions swelled inside me. Almost tearful. I haven't fallen in love with a single group's music in a long while. Thank you so much for sharing!

I am a big fan of Yann Tiersen's music for Amelie but this just blew me away.

Their album is definitely on my list of albums to buy!

Thanks so so so much for sharing.

ps. You're very right, you really do find my favourite music I've never heard!

I just stumbled onto your website today, and I think it might be literally the best thing I've ever discovered on the net. Just a moment later I glanced through your descriptions of the artists, and lo and behold, find one that in many wonderful ways resembles Yann Tiersen, an artist I've followed for years. Amazing. Thanks for creating this site and exposing listeners to such a wide array of music - though I know my bank account will suffer because of it. Heh.

For those still interested in this album, it is now available on iTunes. Just do a search for Hemvagen and you can get the whole thing for less than $7.

Ane Trolle

urban soul // trip hop // female vocals
Ane Trolle popped up first on our radar as a vocalist for Trentemoller in "Moan". She has since brought her voice to the new downtempo Ubiquity signing Peder; on "White Lillies". Now, Ane joined forces with fellow Copenhagenite Pato Siebenhaar for "Sweet Dogs" under the name Trolle//Siebenhaar, obv. Ane's textured and urban voice glides above a weathered reggae production. (Thx, Brandon!)

Distinctive vocal timbre against city beats.

Elizabeth & The Catapult

singer songwriter // folk pop
While I enjoy friends that are predictable, I prefer my music to surprise me. A heavy dose of dynamic songwriting will surely snag my attention, so when E&TC's track "Momma's Boy" slips from folk to Jon Brion pop to vaudeville and back, I can't help but crack a smile. With an instrumentation including cello, viola, flugelhorn, bass, violins, and trumpets along with songs like "Waiting For The Kill", Elizabeth et al. feel like America's extroverted answer to Psapp.

1st in line from a strong, eclectic compilation.

Hey DJ Friday: TTC

More straight fire comes from France (It's not blog house this time). The boys Cuizi Cuiz (last year's Aurgasmic Adventure), Tacteel, Teki Latex and DJ Orgasmic are all striking out on their own, while still collaborating on some real heavy beats.

Moonbabies

dream pop // electronic
Swedish duo Ola Frick and Carina Johansson have been making dreamy, sophisticated pop for the better part of a decade. Hearing their latest album, a mix of lush orchestral swells, twinkling piano, and endearing guitar riffs, is not unlike seeing a rainbow. Bright and sweeping, it's the sort of music you'd put on the playlist while drinking strawberry lemonade under the summer sun. And yet the lyrics, too, are worth more than a passing glance: warm and pensive, they make a fine counterpoint to the sweet melodies and often cover darker, more daring ground. Perhaps that lemonade could do with a touch of liquor.

Good, nearly clean fun
